LEEDS INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

The Digital Art Debate

Following on from 2016’s successful Digital Art Debate, Leeds Dock are excited to be hosting this year’s event at The Tetley with a Show, Tell & Discuss format of presentations, panel discussion, Q&A and networking opportunity.

Digital Art encompasses a wide range of disciplines from graphic art & photography to installations and large scale public art, with technology progressing rapidly the opportunities and implications for artists today are changing just as fast. This event provides the opportunity to hear from some of the leading figures in the UK’s digital art and technology worlds.

Expert panellists/guests this year include:

Carla Rapoport – Founder and Director of the Lumen Prize

Fabio Giampietro – Winner of the Lumen Prize Gold Award 2016.

Doug Dodds – Senior Curator in the V&A’s Word & Image Department, responsible for developing the department’s digital art collections, which range from early computer art to recent born-digital works.

Bryony Bond – Creative Director of The Tetley

And we welcome back Anthony Rowe from Squidsoup whose floating installation Light Water, Dark Sky at Leeds Dock for Light Night Leeds was one of the highlights of the festival. Squidsoup are at the forefront of digital artists blending tech and sound to create large scale immersive public art installations.

Attendees will be invited to submit questions before the event and ask them live on the night as well, with some early suggestions including:

How do you conserve and curate digital art?

Is tech just for interpretation as opposed to art?

Is digital art now a separate genre?

Who are the patrons of digital art and who is buying and collecting digital art?

For the artist, which comes first, technology or art?
